As my first blog post, I say let's connect — I'm Monika!
I'm lurking around the internet by the name of Moki's Crochet. I'm a small creator on Instagram @mokis.crochet, where I share snippets from my daily activities, finished projects, and crochet ideas.
Lately I have an urge to write more. Especially about crochet patterns, about stitches, about industry standards (whatever this means). The crochet industry is heavily a hobby industry, and it's been around for centuries. Specifically because it's heavily a hobby industry, and because it's done all manually, there is little to no standardisation when it comes to patterns.
As I'm writing and starting this blog, I'm thinking about beginners — let these be beginners in crochet, or beginners in crochet design. Reading or writing and publishing a pattern for the first time is quite intimidating. As a beginner it may seem frightening, and very hard to decode a pattern that seems to be written in a foreign language. Not to mention that from one designer to another, the written style and the abbreviations may even change, but in essence they can mean the same thing (sometimes). It always depends.
A quick example
MR (Magic Ring) and MC (Magic Circle) mean the same thing. But SC (Single Crochet) and DC (Double Crochet) — those can also mean the same thing, depending on which terminology the pattern is written in. In UK terminology, DC (Double Crochet) means the same thing as SC (Single Crochet) in US terminology. Mind-blowing, right?
So here I am, trying to help out, shed some light for beginners, and be a support for the advanced crocheters as well.
As crochet is an art — an art that connects stitches row by row — let's connect us too. Find me on Instagram if you have any crochet question, or if you just want to say hi. I may not know all the answers, but I can sure help you search and dig until we find them.
This post comes all by heart and from my desire to connect, and create an impact for you and for your patterns.
